The same grave suspicion, however, of their complicity with the Gambling house keepers rests upon them; there is no reason to doubt the genuineness of Sham-Yin's list in these further cases any more than in the cases of Messrs Mitchell, Stanton, Quincey, Baker, and Holt; and the circumstantial evidence of their guilt on the grave charge of corruption is equally strong.

In the above circumstances it is obviously most undesirable that the officers in question should remain in the Police Force, but in the absence of more conclusive proof of their guilt, it has been a matter of some difficulty to decide in what manner they should be dealt with.
